Teanna Kai
Before we start with this month's interview, we apologize for anyone that we offended last month. Sometimes we forget that not everyone reads every word in the magazine and they may not have seen the humor in the photoshoot from last month. Don't worry, get over it, we're moving on. We'll stick to finding you the best FEMALE cover models that our industry has ever seen.
This month, we had the opportunity to photograph our first "mainstream" model. Teanna Kai was Miss October last year for Penthouse magazine. Thanks to Lawrence Gayoso of finestwomen.com, we had the opportunity to introduce Teanna to our readers.
Despite the fact that Teanna received the wrong directions to the studio from Lawrence, we were still fortunate enough to have enough time to put together one of our best shoots to date. Based on the cover alone, we expect this issue to be the best selling.
Our only regret was that we didn't have an opportunity to get to know Teanna more before the shoot. Behind the beautiful face and killer body is a pretty funny and interesting individual. We hope that she gets to meet more of you be coming out to some upcoming IDRC events.
DS: You mentioned that you were Vietnamese at the photoshoot. Then I noticed that it said you were a mix of Hawaiian and Pilipino on a website. What the truth?
TK: I'm actually 100-percent Vietnamese. When I got started modeling, it was suggested that I tell people I was of mixed decent to get more opportunities. Some agencies don't want a model that is too ethnic. The truth is that I'm pure Vietnamese.
DS: Most Vietnamese your age were born in the States, but you were actually born in Vietnam?
TK: Yeah. My hometown is in the country and it's most well known for martial arts. I don't remember too much as we lived there until I was seven or eight. Then in the middle of one night my parents woke me and me and my six other brothers and sisters were on a boat to Singapore. I was the oldest of the kids.
DS: You have got to respect your parents for risking everything to get you to the United States. How long were you in Singapore?
TK: You never really respect and appreciate your parents until you get older. AS for Singapore, we were only supposed to be there for a year, but it ended up taking two years because a mix up in paperwork sent a different family before ours. Still, we made it and then it was off to Fifth grade in the States.
DS: Was it hard learning English?
TK: It was pretty tough. We first moved to Minnesota and the finally to Northern California. I got left behind for two years to learn English. Don't laugh but I ended up graduating high school when I was 20!
DS: What was you social life like in high school?
TK: I didn't have a social life in high school. My parents were really strict. I wasn't allowed to have a boyfriend or stay out late. I went to school, came home and took care of my brothers and sisters.
DS: How did you go from a sheltered high school student to a Penthouse Pet?
TK: After high school, I went to school to get my license to do makeup and hair. I enjoyed the work, but I hated the hours and working weekends. Then, I got my boobs and I had to show the world (laughing)!
DS: What?
TK: I was always very self-concious about my looks. When I got my boobs, I felt so much better and more confident. I know that it probably doesn't make sense to guys. Think of it this way, it's like putting 18-inch wheels on your Civic. Suddenly your noticed.
DS: Are you still self-conscious about your looks?
TK: Yeah. There are parts of my body that I'm just no happy with. I do my best to stay in the best shape possible. That means a personal trailer four times a week and two hours at the gym every day. It's cardio, abs and strength training. That's in between auditions and shoots.
DS: Back to Penthouse, how did that happen?
TK: Through the modeling agency that I was registered with I met a photographer that shot for that. I asked him if he thought I could be in Penthouse. He looked at me from every angle and said he thought he could shoot me and I'd have a good chance of being the cover model.
DS: Was the exposure in Penthouse good for your modeling career?
TK: Definitely. I received more job offers and my rate was increased. I had the opportunity to pick and choose the jobs that I wanted.
